Once upon a time I was the least adventurous eater in the world. I knew what I liked, and I knew that I hated trying new things. I think it comes from years and years of eating at the same restaurants, and eating the same food that my mother made. It was all so good, why did I need to try new things?
Well in my final years of high school, I got my first job at a restaurant. Prior to working there, I had never eaten at the restaurant. The restaurant was a small local chain that I had heard of, but never personally eaten at.
With the job, I got a very generous employee discount that made eating at the restaurant easy. The food there was general American food, with a few things that I had never tried before. But I quickly learned one thing, everything on the menu was delicious. Which made trying the new things easy. I had faith in the fact that if it was good enough to be on their menu, it was undoubtedly delicious.
One of the most popular items was sweet potato fries. I had never had a sweet potato, much less in fry form. To this day, I don’t know how I made it through 17 years of my life without trying sweet potatoes… because they are quite possibly the most delicious things ever. They topped them with a sweet brown sugar sauce that I have dreams about to this day. So so so good.
My lesson for you: don’t be afraid to try new things. You never know when you may stumble upon your very own sweet potato fries.
